Say yes to warm feet

Fugu, the exotic puffer fish, is a lighthearted jape at how cyclists need to dress in the winter. The irony is deliberate. While winter Assos apparel, like this fuguBootie, are a bit bulky by comparison to other Assos pieces, they're lighter, thinner, and sleeker than other togs on the market. And we're happy to say that the fuguBootie doesn't deviate from this standard.

Assos' fuguBootie is largely comprised of 2.5mm neoprene. The ankle cuff is slightly higher, with a gripper to seal your socks and shoes from the elements. There's a cutout on the bottom for your cleat and heel pad. For extra warmth, a layer of strataGonLight has been added to the toe and front part of the bootie. The magic of strataGon is a laminate that does an amazing feat -- the micro-pores that allow sweat vapor to escape through the material close down when they don't sense heat, thus enhancing insulation when your feet need to stay warm. Furthermore, when the temperature in your shoes goes up, the pores open to increase ventilation when your feet need to cool off.

The fuguBootie is part of Assos' climaRange 7. Assos calls this range winterPlus, with an optimal protection range at temperatures around 21-43 degrees Fahrenheit. For ease of use, Assos has incorporated a zipper at the rear of the covers. This zipper is waterproof, and it includes a locking operation lever.

The Assos fuguBootie is available in the color Black Volkanga and in Size 0 (35-38), Size I (38-42), and Size II (43-46).

I love these booties

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: ll

I have used these booties for 4 seasons now and the zippers are still working just fine for me. These are hands down the warmest booties I have used to date. I would buy another pair of these booties

Fugu Booties

These things are great to be expected. Warm, great looking, and fit perfectly. One major flaw. The zippers on both boots are a pain. They open up and won't stay in the tracks. If I monkey with them, I can sometimes get them to work. The booties are only 2 months old. Note: I bought these from CC because I bought a new pair of other Assos booties and had the same problem on day one with the zippers. Put them on, look down and the boot is open. I AM NOT STRETCHING THESE. I have a size 12 shoes and have the size 11 as specified. I am returning to get another pair with hopefully more luck. They keep me warmer than my Castelli Duvios which are neoprene without the quality of these. But those damn zippers. They are finicky.

I don't get it.

I agree with the general problems outlined above. I find all booties have the same zipper issue. I've used three different brand of zippered booties in the last five years (two just this season) and had the same zipper issue. This is why I have not forked over the money for a pair of Assos booties. This is mostly because of my large shoes (size 12/49) and the fact that I XXXL boots are not available. The only pair of boots that work consistently are the Pearl Izumi quilted ones which have a long, wide velcro enclosure on the back. They aren't as nice as some of the others but they keep my feet warm and I never have zipper malfunctions because there are none.
