Get tacky.

The polyurethane/EVA foam sandwich construction of Arundel's Gecko Bar Tape isn't terribly revolutionary, but the low-profile, rubbery grip of its surface would certainly inspire a few political agitators. The tape is right around 2mm at its fattest, tapering toward the edges so it goes on thin and evenly. Its dimpled surface provides a confident, tacky grip — even in wet conditions — and resists abrasion and dirt better than traditional cork.

Polarizing. Worth it if you're a fan.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've been putting this tape on all of my road bikes and skipping my cyclocross bikes. Not the thickest or squishiest of tapes, but mated to a semi-compliant carbon fiber handlebar --the feel becomes crazy luxurious, like Zapp Brannigan's love of velour. While mated to an aluminum bar, the padding may be too jarring to ride with. The feel with bar hands or super thin gloves is just right. I'm not a fan of the tactile feel sticky Lizard Skins bartape on a hot day. It reminds me too much I have stuff sticking to the side of my leg in the nether regions. I don't need to add the sensation to my hands. Where this tape kinda sucks is in the rain. They keep sweaty hands dry, but they get overwhelmed in a downpour. Pull out a different bike with different tape on wet days.

Fur Black Fan.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've wrapped a few bars with the Arundel Gecko Fur Black tape. I have found to to be no more difficult than regular cork tape, which is to say that it is a challenge unless you are a pro mechanic who wraps bars daily. When it is time to re-wrap bars, open a beer and take my time. I don't always nail it, but I can usually do pretty well.

Once it is on, the Fur Black's microsuede surface has a very pleasing dark matte black look and feels great in the hands with or without gloves. After a few months of riding, the tape got a little less cushy, but it didn't tear or lose its grippy texture.

Very fussy tape; get help or forget it.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

If you have taped your bars before many times and have the confidence to try to use this stuff, then go ahead. Maybe you will have a better experience than I did. However, I found this to be a frustrating loss of time and money. The adhesive stripped half-way off of one roll when I removed the backing (I've never had that happen before). Having read and watched videos on how to wrap bars with lizard skin bar tape, I was still unprepared for the progressive wrinkle that inevitably develops along the edge as you move up the bar. Trying to not stretch the tape is an exercise in futility as the tape will not adequately cover 440 size bars if not stretched. So, back to stretching a little more and you've got a worsening situation with the aforementioned wrinkle. Try to overlap a little less to compensate and the wrinkle pushes the tape off and you get a gap. Really, this must be what the expression "french kissing a rattle snake" means. Unfortunately, I like white bar tape so by the time I got done with this job my handlebars look like they've been down a gravel road. The takeaway: either I don't have the voodoo that is required to wrap bars with with this stuff or it's just bad stuff. Either way, I accept the fact that this product isn't for me. Good luck.

Disappointed in a couple of ways

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The bar tape was difficult to install compared to more flexible cork alternatives. It is less flexible, and re-wrapping it to fix irregularities started to break the tape (cannot be re-wrapped after some use). Though I got it close to perfect, the tape shifted and opened new gaps after a few weeks. The tape itself looks good, but it's challenging to tape it nicely and have it stay that way. Disappointed.

While in use, I like how the tape feels for regular riding. However if you ride without gloves and do long rides, the tape is quite uncomfortable compared to cork alternatives such as Sram Supercork. I also don't like it as much as Pro Digital Smart Silicon Bar Tape.

So far pretty good

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have now purchased and installed two rolls of the white Gecko tape. I have had mixed experiences with the double sided backing tape, the first roll having no issue and the second roll the backing tape separating from the bar tape as I tried to remove the cover. I was able to gently push it back on the bar tape and apply without issue, but something to be aware of.

I have not installed the Lizard Skins, so I cannot give a relative review. That said, I find the tape to be tacky enough and provide adequate cushioning (I ride with gloves) for my purposes. While the white does not stay pristine, I would not expect it to, contributing to the attractiveness of the price-- I feel less guilty replacing more often.

Disappointing

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I had high hopes for this, as I love Arundel cages. I might have had a defective batch, but there was no adhesive backing on most of the tape--so it shifts under pressure and is beginning to bunch up on the bar. I'm guessing I'll have to change it out very soon.

Nice feel

Nice tape for the price. I was able to install it on my own without difficulties. I haven't tried it out on long rides yet but it performs well around town.

Kind of impressed

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I normally used lizard skins but i needed to quickly switch some cables, had to cut the bar tape and this was the only tape my shop had on hand that day. Not as comfortable as lizardskins or as tacky in wet conditions but it has amazing life. I put this on in April and ride around 15 hours each week, it has still not started to fray or degrade. Color is still pretty good and holds up well to sweat. For the price it's good bar tape that will last.

Pure Crap

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I either got a bad package, or other reviewers are much more adept at installing. When I installed the first side, the adhesive peeled off the tape when I pulled off the the backing paper.... got around it by using the park tool electrical tape trick (wrap electrical tape inside out, bar tape sticks to that). Both sides have little bubbles/lumps, material does not seem very pliable or flexible. Basically a pain in the butt to install. I have used deda tape (usually wrap 3-4 bars a year between cross and road bike) and never had an issue.... Will see how it holds up.

Tacky, grippy, durable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great stuff. Very durable. Requires some subtle English when you're installing the tape, but each bar tape has its own necessary tension to make it just right. It is around 1/2 the price of the Lizzard Skins similar product and just as good, IMO.

Good Stuff Maynard!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this tape almost exclusively (the White). I have tried, and continue to explore other tapes, but I always come back to this one. The price is right. And I strongly disagree with another reviewer who stated that this tape is 'not very durable'. Perhaps he/she was speaking of the cork variety? (which I have not tried) This handlebar tape is very durable in my experience. I use the White almost exclusively. As with all whites it does pick up dirt. It cleans up ok. Personally, I am one of those that would prefer to have dirty white handlebar tape than a clean "looking" darker color (they are just as dirty, just not as obvious). The feel of the tape is rubbery; not too slick, not too sticky. To me this tape's value point is extremely high.
Finally, I mentioned that I try other tapes. It's less about the Gecko tape and more about just seeing what's out there - but here's what I am seeking:
- A white tape that never gets dirty, or that cleans up to near-original form easily. (this is not the Gecko - or any other tape that I have come across. However, the Fizik white comes closest in this department).
- A tape that has the right about of tack to it; not too slippery nor too sticky (I think the Gecko is perfect in this area)
- A tape that offers me the right amount of cushion (for me). (The Gecko could be a little more cushiony for my taste, but it's not bad where it is)
- And finally, I seek out other tapes as I have been trying to find one with a green that matches the green highlights on my bike.

In the end, I am very happy with this tape and highly recommend you try it if you have not.

I would rank this tape with Lizard Skin for less than 1/2 the price. Great stuff.

Great cushion, soft grip

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have used almost every tape out there, and seem to always revert to cork tape. I like the ease of wrapping it, the amount of cushion, and like that the cost is low enough that I dont get too bummed when I have to buy new tape when it wears out. My go to is almost always the Arundel cork, so I figured I'd give this gecko tape a swing. Initial impressions are good; it wrapped with ease, but seems even a little more padded than the cork. I'm not typically one who seeks out thick bar tape, and I like that this provides noticeably more padding than most fizik tapes without the added bulk of some of the thicker Lizardskins tape. Time will tell about the durability, but chances are I'll just pick up another sub- $20 roll of arundel and move on with my life.

Not bad for the price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Not very durable and I am wondering about the whole sticky thing. Do you need sticky bar tape? I ride in the rain with the Fizik Glossy tape and have never felt my hand slip. Maybe because I wear gloves?
Durability of the Arundael tape is not high.

solid

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

You would figure "tape is tape" but this stuff is pretty nice. The install was pretty easy but the feel of it is wicked nice (I'm from the New England where wicked is an adjective). The tape is not too bulky and has a good solid feel. I used it on my aerobars and ended up using the cloth medical tape to secure the end and haven't had any issues

What about the thickness? I'm looking for somethings at least 2mm thick.

The good stuff

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Grippy but not sticky. Comfortable but not pillowy. Lasts a full season (barring the "C**SH" word)" My favorite tape!

Soft and affordable

Soft poofy feel, like new car smell for a bike. Pretty standard as bar tape goes. Haven't had a chance to see feel it in the rain. I'm regretting not getting the furry black version, tight pants and black fur are such a good combo.

Fur Black for Stealth.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I just put the fur black on, and am liking it so far. It has a dry-feeling microsuede surface, a lot like Fizik's Dual tape, but in a more unterstated package. Be sure to check out Arundel's instructions on the back of the box. If you have wrapped very many bars, they will make you laugh.
