A 34mm stack height at a light 9 ounces.

In order to run ultramarathons, you're going to need to log tons of miles of training. To run that many miles, you're going to need a shoe like the Altra Men's Paradigm 1.5 Running Shoe. Everything about this shoe was designed with the long-distance runner in mind. Altra started from the ground up with its unique FootPod outsole that maps the bones and tendons of the foot. Canted lugs provide cushioning where you need it and keeps your foot positioned correctly from the treadmill to the trail.

The FootShape toe box allows the bones of your foot to spread out evenly so your foot isn't being squeezed over long distances. This creates a more natural running style that helps to decrease the chances of bunions, hammertoes, and plantar fasciitis. Altra's unique Natural Ride System completes the proper metatarsal configuration by combining the ZeroDrop platform with the foot-shaped last, allowing you to run as nature intended. Updated from the original, the 1.5 also has enhanced reflectivity to help those careless drivers see you at night, as well as improved durability for long-lasting performance, run after run.

My very least favorite Altra shoe ever

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: 13

I've owned pretty much every Altra ever made. I love their wide toe box and need the 0mm stack. Their shoes always seem 3rd rate in terms of materials and construction. This shoe is awkward to run in, has a huge bulge in the arch of the footbed and just feels sloppy in the cushioning.
The Torin is their best road shoe yet.

Incredible shoe

A co-worker made me aware of "thick soled" shoes and recommended I try them out. I originally purchased them for running only. They function great on both the road and treadmill. I find that I need to adjust the "cushion" of the treadmill slightly to compensate for the shoes. After using them for a few weeks, I decided to start and wear them to work. I usually walk 10-20 miles on concrete floor. I have to say that these are life changing. I feel so much better at the end of each day and the aches have gone away. Couldn't recommend these enough.

    Great Running Shoe

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: 9.5

I recently decided to try out the thick soled shoes I had seen around for running. After talking to some folks who had tried both the Altra's and the Hoke One One's I decided to go with the Altra's. I have run in some minimalist shoes in the past so I wasn't a complete nube to the zero drop but all of them had either regular padding or no padding. It took about a week to 10 days of wearing them everywhere and running in them to break them in and once I did they are the most comfy running shoes I have worn.
The open toe box is a big win. It took a few days before my toes took advantage of the roomier accommodations. I just ran a 1/2 marathon in them and I would say the shoes took a major chunk of the abuse. Usually after a big run like that my feet are pretty hammered and this time I haven't hardly thought about them. I really like this shoe.
