The centerpiece.

When designing the MK1 Bib Shorts, 7mesh Industries must have started from the ground up. While the upstart manufacturer doesn't specifically claim this, the details that inform the shorts' construction indicate that it didn't blindly adhere to any industry truisms. From fabric to fit and even the way the chamois is attached, the radically designed Bib Shorts may be the centerpiece of 7mesh's argument for becoming "the world's most respected cycling apparel brand."

While the shorts' warp knit nylon/elastane blend may seem familiar, the waffle patterning on the inside is a wholly unexpected feature. It increases surface area to mechanically boost the material's inherent wicking ability, keeping you drier and more comfortable. The material is arranged in panels that are darted and shaped, so they fit your body rather than deforming to stretch across it.

The number of panels used — and the seams needed to join them — are kept to a minimum to reduce abrasion. True to its own exacting standards, 7mesh was unwilling to sacrifice next-to-skin comfort in pursuit of superior fit. Given the lack of bunching and unrestricted movement we've enjoyed in these, no sacrifice was needed.

While the fit is excellent, the ingenious method of incorporating the chamois may be our favorite part of the shorts. Instead of being sewn directly to the shorts, the chamois is stitched to what 7mesh refers to as a hammock, but which might be more helpfully described as a free-floating panel of mesh. This mesh is then stitched to the shorts. The result is that the chamois moves with your body, independently of the body of the shorts, relocating the point of friction from the body/chamois interface to the chamois/shorts interface and all but eliminating chafing.

The chamois itself is a non-bulky affair from Cy-Tech's EIT wing, providing just the right amount of targeted, high-density foam padding for comfort without a pillowy diaper feel. A subtle central channel relieves pressure on your perineum without creating any abrasive ridges, and the soft microfiber face material breathes to keep you dry.

The MK1s have a high waist, a feature that may not appeal to all tastes but offers extended support that we certainly enjoy. The bib straps are designed with vertical stretch to eliminate restriction and a virtually flat profile that won't stand out through your jersey or interfere with layering and pack straps. Silicone grip at the wide, non-pinching leg bands keep the shorts in place and reflective detailing helps keep you visible in low-light conditions.
