Combining old and new into pure performance.

The 3T Rotundo Team Carbon handlebar is the bar that the Schleck brothers manhandled at the Tour, the Olympics, and countless other races in 2008. To the championship of Luxembourg, to the yellow jersey, to the white jersey, and more. While CSC-Saxo Bank director Bjarne Riis was probably most interested in the 3T Ventus bar when he signed 3T as a sponsor, a nice bonus were the traditional-bend carbon fiber bars that were available to his team. Unlike other bar manufacturers, 3T is following the wants of the pro peloton. For pros, and the climbers on the Riis squad, the round bar has great appeal.

This is the 3T Rotundo Team Carbon. It is lightweight, oversized, and plenty stiff. 3T was well-regarded in the past thanks to their beloved "Merckx Bend." This meant a medium-drop handlebar that was fairly square on top. The Rotundo carries on this great tradition. A tradition that we gladly grab on to. We like round bends because we find they offer more hand positions, which gives our muscles more comfort that the limited positions offered by ergo bend bars.

The 3T Rotundo Team Carbon has 139mm of drop and 82.6mm of reach. It is designed to fit in oversized (31.8mm) stems. The center section is designed to withstand the forces that clip-on aerobars put on handlebars. The bar is available in three sizes, 40, 42, and 44mm, measured center-to-center. The weight is 192g (in the 40cm size).

Bars for a crit racer

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A note on stiffness: in 40 cm the bars are as stiff as enve classics and aluminum Ergonovas. This is not to say there is no flex, just that it is not noticeable under normal riding conditions and is in line with bars generally regarded for their stiffness.
I purchased 40cm rotundo bars based solely on aesthetics and the assumption that I would like the large drops. Going off of the rule that the drops should be parallel to the ground, the transition from the hoods is relatively uncomfortable with shimano levers. With levers perpendicular to the ground, there is a significant dip. For the casual rider who spends most of their times riding on the transition from hoods to bars, this will be very uncomfortable. However, when riding in a low, aggressive position the hoods can be held nicely as bullhorns and you can lock your wrists into the curve. The drops are what make this bar special, with ample room on both the curved section and the bottoms. Unlike the Ergonova or other ergo styled curved, the rotundos seem to support your wrists because they don't make you adapt to a suboptimal curve.

To summarize, for a rider who spends most of their time in the drops or in the hoods in a low position with a long stem these bars are ideal. For a casual, they will quickly be tossed.
