Integrating your accessories.

As frame engineers continue to refine and rework their road frames and forks in order to build more aerodynamic machines, so too are component manufacturers going back to the drawing board in search of more efficient, wind-cheating designs. While we all know that the more accessories we bolt on and attach to our machines decreases our overall aerodynamics, there are certain components that have become staples on our bikes. You know exactly what we're referring to: those bulbous, unsightly computers that stand out like sails in the wind on our bars and stems.

This is where 3T comes in, as its engineers have been providing professional cyclists with some of the world's best componentry for more than 50 years. 3T took the traditional cockpit design and flipped it on its head, morphing it into an incredibly lightweight and rigid stem, shroud, and navigation dashboard all in one. It's called the Integra LTD, as it readily integrates your Garmin Edge head units, which, according to 3T, "improves security, aerodynamics, and appearance."

The system works in several ways. The stem includes a sleek 'cap' that conceals the mounting bolts in an elegant and aerodynamic manner. This shroud was designed to be easily swapped out for a Garmin Integra Mount (available separately), which seamlessly integrates your Garmin computer directly into the stem. Regardless of whether you plan on running an integrated computer, the Integra LTD provides you with a much more sleek appearance than simply strapping a bulky mount to your handlebar or existing stem.

The combined weight of the full carbon stem and shroud comes in at 175g (110mm), and it includes titanium hardware. The stem was designed for road, track, and triathlon bikes but can also be used on mountain and cyclocross setups. It features a 1-1/8inch steerer diameter and a UD Gloss Black finish. The stem is available in 100, 110, 120, and 130mm lengths.

Unanswered Question

What is the clamp width on the Integra LTD stem? I have searched all over and cannot find this piece of info. I am trying to determine which aero road handlebars (which all have a limited round clamp area) will work with the Integra.

3 stars but still recommended

UPDATED 3-15-2015: I can no longer recommend this stem. It has a really funky clamp design and the carbon bars started slipping after several months. I cleaned and re-tightened to the recommended torque, to no avail. The clamp is hidden by the carbon upper plate (or mount if you have it) so you can't visually see what's happening with the clamp itself. The clamp has this weird 3-point (i.e. 3-screw) top half that screws downward into the stem base. I have large diameter FSA bars and still, the two clamp halves almost touch. I'm about to scrap the stem. I suppose I won't even bother with warranty because Competitive Cyclist changed their policy and you now have to fight them when you have a product issue even when you purchased the product under the original return policy. But I digress.).

ORIGINAL: I have to give this 3 stars because of a few design shortcomings, but overall I would still recommend the stem. The biggest selling point is the integrated Garmin mount. Once you purchase and install (found mine at Staples of all places) it works well. The plastic Garmin mount is actually lighter in weight than the (carbon?) cover plate that it replaces. However, shortcoming #1 is the finish on the stem doesn't quite match the finish on the mount. The Garmin mount is a darker black plastic closer to a typical glossy black bike part, whereas the stem is a lighter shade of black, sort of a sparkling metallic charcoal or graphite color. The result is OK but 3T could have done more to "integrate" the finish and appearance. Mechanically, the Garmin mount matches pretty well to the stem and is secure. The stem comes with assorted 3T stickers that you could apply to the Garmin plate to detract from the color mismatch.

Shortcoming #2 is the stem could have been better weight-optimized. It's a little bit chunky and heavier than most carbon or aluminum stems. I believe at this pricepoint they could have pared weight by fine-tuning the stem profile slightly while maintaining the oversized look. The clamp underneath the cover plate works quite well but the threads on one of mine seem to have some interference that I thought initially might have been cross-threading but it's OK I think.

The overall impression/result -- the finish mismatch, the weight, etc., is a stem that almost seems like a pre-production prototype. Despite these imperfections, it appears to be a really solid stem that still looks good and has probably the most usable mount solution I have tried.

Are you 100% certain The integra garmin mount will fit the edge 1000? Everything I've read online suggests it won't and the 3t website says it accepts up to edge 810.

Have I missed something?
