Description

Race ready.

Too often, triathlon shorts force you to pick your speed. Do you want shorts that reduce hydrodynamic drag? Or do you prefer ideal support in the saddle? Perhaps you want compressive qualities for the run? And when it comes to a race where you have to be equally disciplined across all three endeavors, we don't have to tell you that singularity isn't a desirable feature in shorts. But, this is where the 2XU Comp Tri Shorts come in. With a focus on athlete feedback and development, 2XU engineered the perfect amalgamation of attributes for the Comp Tri Shorts.

2XU approached the Comp Tri Shorts with a deliberately even focus across all three disciplines of triathlon. Think about that. What fabric performs equally across the board? Well, the answer came in the form of development, and from this, the 70D Kinetic Speed fabric was born. We know, we're not fans of titles filled with seemingly arbitrary numbers and letters, either. So, let's make some sense of this fabric. Basically, the '70D' stands for 70 denier. What's a denier? Simply put, a denier is a unit of measure for the weight of a fabric. Technically speaking, it measures a fabric's grams-per-9000-meters. And while a typical recovery compression piece features a material choice around 200 deniers and up, the Tri Shorts use a lighter, less constricting 70 denier fabric. This means that you still receive a lightly focused graduated compression, but the most direct gains are made through limiting muscle oscillation. So, whether you're getting slapped by wakes, getting rattled in the saddle, or pummeled by your pounding on the pavement, the Kinetic Speed fabric provides an enhanced level of muscle support that will minimize fatigue.

And while this design feature complements all of the triathlon disciplines, 2XU still managed to add specified technology for both land and water. Starting with the water aspects, the Tri Shorts use the patented Askin Fabric for its hydrophobic properties. If your Latin is a little rusty, this means that the material is capable of repelling water during the swim. In fact, the fabric is minimizes water retention by around 50%. This also translates to an equal reduction in hydrodynamic and accelerate drag. But, you're probably wondering how this is possible? Well, Askin is constructed from a high-density, hydrophobic polyester filament. This means that the material's composition is tightly bound and provides a next-to-skin fit. However, 2XU ensured that the flexibility wasn't to be a lost attribute. Instead, the fabric incorporates a four-way stretch system that allows a full range of movement, while retaining its targeted compressive qualities.

So, 2XU ensured that you'll be blazing into T1, but how do the shorts hold up from there? Of course, one of the most pressing issues is riding or running with a wet, bulky chamois -- our bodies cringe merely thinking about it. The approach to alleviating this concern was twofold. First, the chamois has to be substantial enough for support in the saddle, yet it can't be so sizable as to inhibit your swim or run. Secondly, the insert has to remain dry over all three disciplines. Basically, 2XU set out to create the Holy Grail of triathlon chamois, and it did with the exclusive SBR Fleece insert. This chamois uses a variable density design that provides targeted support to pressured nerves, while remaining unnoticeable on foot and in the water. Additionally, 2XU constructed the fleece from a micro-filament polyester yarn with hydrophobic properties. So, neither water or perspiration will bog down the dryness of the fleece.

To ensure the shorts' fit, 2XU placed an adjustable drawstring at the waist. Additionally, the legs are held in place by 2XU's own, non-abrasive silicone leg grippers. And for further comfort, the Comp Tri Shorts feature a complete flatlock seam construction. So, you won't experience anymore pinching or painful rubbing in your shorts.

The 2XU Comp Tri Shorts are available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black/black, Charcoal, and Indigo/venere red.

Very comfortable ride....

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I delayed my ride, until UPS showed up with 2XU shorts. The fit was right on as far as the size chart. The chamois is not too thick, which I like. Some bike shorts make me feel like I'm wearing a diaper, and are not comfortable during a ride or run.
My wife loves how the look on me, and she asked me to buy some more colors....
